Analysis of Mood Board

Bryony is going to be the villain in our film and she needs to look creepy and suspitious to the audience. We have put a few different hair styles down on the mood board which will be used throughout the trailer. There is the greasy look which will be used when Bryony is at the end and at the top of her mental stage. When there is a picture found of Bryony's character with her family she has pigtails to make her appear as creepy from a younger age.

The location would be at Shanie's dad's house, as his house is quite isolated which means it is further away from everyone else. This is stereotyped in most horror films as scary. We also used a sharp object but have included scissors in there, this shows that the killings aren't professional and scissors are usually stereotyped in films to commit murders and seriously injure others, and even kill.

Research Targets

A good effort so far Jordan - although some of your posts are brief. To improve your research further aim to revisit posts and make sure all of the following areas have been addressed: Genre Target Audience Characters Narrative Engimas Titles Camera Composition Sound Mise En Scene Unique Selling Points Pace of editing A really good start - well done!

Planning for Film Trailer- Ideas

- Shanie has volunteered to place the setting at her Dad's house as it is close to a field, which is good because it can stereotype the horror movie genre and means there is no where for the victim to go.
- The house is old and surrounded by big fields, giving off the impression that its in the middle of nowhere. This is a cliche setting for a horror film.
- Bryony is going to use all black contacts to make her look mentally unstable and uncaring, therefore she is capable of anything.
- A few props will be deliberately included in the camera shots to make the audience wonder about violence and how Bryony is going to use these objects.
- We will get some black eye contacts for Bryony to make her look more creepy and suspicious.
- Using specific close ups on Bryony's face will also make her seem more crazy as it captures all her emotions and details.

Batman 'The Dark Knight' Magazine Analysis

This magazine front cover is made to enforce the rivalry between the two characters on the front and how superior 'Batman The Dark Knight' is and why it is better than others. The stereotypical contrast between the hero and the villain are that the villain is wearing face paint, which isn't usually what's the case when trying to hide his facial features. It's as if he is hiding his identity yet you can make out his face even if he didn't have the make-up on. 'His death shocked the world. But now HEATH LEDGER'S stunning performance lives on inside 'The Dark Knight'. Heath Ledger is a massively well known actor and his last ever film before he passed was 'The Dark Knight' and this film was one of the biggest grossing films of all time because of his contribution to the film and magazines and reports have said that it was his best role in his whole acting career.

The colour scheme on the magazine cover is effective as the words coded in red are the ones which 'Entertainment Weekly' want the audience to pick up on. 'Entertainment' is the first word which would stand out as the biggest and red coloured word. This is to ensure to the readers that they will be entertained by this magazine weekly and what they read in this magazine will make them want to keep buying this magazine. The next word is 'Batman' Which is not only the title of the film but the name of the superhero which is short and would stick in the readers head so when it actually comes to watching the film, they will know that the film is called Batman and he is a hero.

Poster Analysis- 'The hills have eyes'

This trailer begins with history, potentially to explain the events and traumatic things that happen throughout and this could be later referred to, to explain some of the answers as to why and how these things happened. There are big explosions which could signify violence and relate to the future of the trailer and the reason behind it. The trailer then builds up with happy music, country music. To make the audience think that everything is fine and at this point they wouldn't guess that the genre of the film would be a horror. When there is a sudden stop in the music and a loud thrilling noise, this is where the trailer begins to reveal scary and nerving scenes to the audience, which would grip them and make them want to go and watch the film in the cinema. The family is a stereotypical American family which would frighten the audience because it makes them think it could be anyone that watches it.

The stereotype of the man who wishes them a safe journey, is not only quite poor judging on his clothing and employment, but smiles at the end of his camera time, which could relate to the fate of the family and scares and excites the audience as they expect the worst to what's coming. He is also reasonably old which could mean he is quite unstable. When he smiles, the camera shot repeats itself over and over. This is to make his face stick in the audience's head and what significance his smile has to the rest of the trailer and the film. The fact that when the car crashes, spikes appear on the road and other dangerous sharp objects, yet the family don't know, which excites the audience and then reveals that this film is a horror and will be containing violence.

There is a stereotype of a good looking girl sunbathing in her bikini which makes her appear vulnerable to the audience. The youngest boy appears to be the most suspicious and begins to explore what could be happening around them. 'The hills' could be seen as things to hide behind, you can also get lost in hills which makes the title seem powerful and scary within itself. When things begin to happen around and to the family, this is what would intrigue the audience and they don't reveal enough to ruin the film but just enough to make the viewers want to go and watch it in the cinema.

21 Jump Street Trailer Analysis

The film is immediately stereotyped as a comedy as the opening line is 'Not so slim shady- what's up?' This dialect is appeared as funny and shows that the two characters are familiar with each other and knew each other before they met at the police station applying to be an officer. 'Channing Tatum' is stereotyped as the cool, popular, better looking, dumb and stronger one, whereas the character played by 'Jonah Hill' is stereotyped as the unpopular, overweight and not so cool yet clever and smart character. The next scene shows 'Channing Tatum' fighting and being good at it, but when it comes to the test results, 'Jonah Hill' exceeds the other character by a lot of marks.
The characters end up helping each other through their struggles and end up passing their tests and become police officers as well as best friends.
The actors 'Channing Tatum' and 'Jonah Hill' are both massively well known stars in the film industry and because they are both matched together in this film this would attract various audience and not specifically one group as 'comedy' is one of the few genres which attract a multiple of genders and ages when it comes to watching a film.
They have to go back to school to infultrate the dealers of the drugs and find the supplier, as a drug that is spreading to different schools needs to be stopped. When they go back, there is a twist as 'Channing Tatum' becomes uncool and 'Jonah Hill' becomes the popular one.

The target audience is around the ages 15-24 and this is because of the typical comedy which is stereotyped to be found funny around these ages. The film contains drugs, drinking, teenage parties and fighting, which is another stereotype of the lifestyle around this age group which is why this film would appeal more to this audience.
The camera shots are quite quick as the tempo of the film is fast paced as it is an action film as much as it is a comedy. '21 Jump Street' is a location or an address which doesn't give too much away to the audience from the title but as the '21 Jump Street' is where the main task for the police is set, it's quite an effective title to have as it intrigues the audience.

Film Poster- The Holiday Analysis

The first thing that is noticed about the poster is that everyone is smiling and this suggests happiness and there are warm colours used to represent warm feelings and possibly love. The fact both pairs of the couples are looking happy, suggests chemistry between the two and reveals that it is a romantic film and would target probably more of a female or couple audience.

The title 'The Holiday' is branded across the middle of the poster in big black font to enhance that this is the name of the film. 'Holiday' could suggest they find each other away from their homes and 'The' could mean that it's the holiday in which they find each other and following up from that, find love.
Big well known actors including Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet are all starring in this film and they write their names proudly across the top of the title because their reputation as actors will make the film more successful.

'December' is enlarged at the bottom of the page to suggest this is the month and date when the film will be released. Sharing the same month as Christmas, this adds to the romantic side of the film and stereotypes falling in love around the Christmas period. This will increase interest from viewers of the film and expand the target audience from age groups to genders.

Captain America Magazine Cover Analysis

The phrases 'magazine of the year' and 'summers biggest superhero' suggest that this magazine is and features the biggest and most popular issues. They make the magazine seem more official and of better quality. The use of the words 'plus!' and 'and!' Give the impression that there is a lot of information crammed into the magazine. This makes the readers want to buy this edition as it could be superior to the others.  The masthead states the name of the magazine, half of which is blocked by the head of the main character. This makes both seem more important , the figure is made to stand out above everything else on the page and the whole magazine is made to look really well known and popular, enough so that part of the name can be covered and the audience will still know what the magazine is called.
The name captain America is big and white in the middle of the page associating with the character. This is clearly the protagonist who the film producers want to remember. He is already a Marvel hero which makes the film successful in itself and gives it an early reputation to be good.  At the bottom of the page, a 32 page sci-if special tells the audience they are getting more for their money.

The colour scheme is predominantly red, white and blue backing the theme of America and matching the colours of the characters costume. The splashes of yellow in the page links back to the idea of summer.

The main image, features the main character, his stance and facial expression suggests he is determined and ready for some action. This connotes the genre- action appealing to the specific target audience, the character is very attractive which appeals to the female audience. The eye contact of the character is one of the attention grabbing elements.

The Ring Two- Poster Analysis

This horror poster is quite unique to others in the respect that it doesn't give anything away other than there is a girl involved and something that represents a ring. This works successfully in the viral marketing campaign of selling this film as this is what makes the audience want to go and watch the film. There is not really any specific colours only shades are used, this is to enhance the girl sitting down in the middle of the poster. The ring is enhanced in the 'O' of the word 'two' which is clever imagery and would make the audience remember the name of the film. This 'O' could also represent the 'well' in the film and this is what causes all the traumatic and horrific events that occur because of the character the emerges from it.

The caption below says in faint, ancient writing 'Fear comes Full circle. 'Which could explain how important the ring is and why firstly the film is named after it and secondly why they have put it into the title as well as naming it. The fact you can't see the characters face could add suspense and excitement as the audience would want to see this therefore this would make them want to go and watch the film even more.
The release date is below in white writing which stands out from the black background this is because they want you to recognize and remember the date. The white dress she is wearing outlines her figure so the audience can see she is a little girl, staging her as vulnerable yet the audience need to watch the film to see what is the story behind it.

Horror Film Posters- New to Old

Older horror film posters often used multiple colours and faces as their stereotype of fear in the 1980's. The first example shown above is using very high saturation in the picture, which makes the eyes look more bright and evil and the background look even more haunted. Although this might appear scary at first, poster colours have changed as majority of the colours involved in present posters are red, black and white.
The titles are also very different now, as these ones like 'Death ship, Alien Dead, and 'The Children' are all very easy to read and give away what could possibly happen in the film. As times have developed, horror films often stick to one word and this word isn't easy to trace, which would make the audience more likely to go and watch the film as they would want to know what it's about e.g. 'Insidious', 'Sinister', 'Saw'.

Horror films in this time era are often seen as more scary, not just because of the technology, but the combination of the technology and the ideas that are put into the films. Majority of the horror films around this time are in the setting of a normal person, For example, Insidious is a young boy living in a normal house with his family, as shown. So this idea that it could happen to anyone scares but also excites the audience and therefore makes more sales. There are no extravagant colours used and the title isn't longer than 2 words, which is short, snappy and yet scary.
Some things haven't changed. Like the size of the title and how the producers of the film obviously want that to stand out the most so the audience remember it.

Avatar Magazine Front Cover Analysis (Sci-Fi)

You could say that because the magazine is released monthly, the price is higher due to the information and facts given to the audience through the magazine are valid and worth the extra money. This price is given at £3.99 which is beyond the average price, but because this edition is released over a longer period of time and less frequent, it could mean people would prefer this magazine over a monthly period rather than the same information spread out and would have to buy more and spend more.
Under the title 'Avatar' the magazine says 'A decade in the making' which gives away that not only is the film extremely advanced, but also because the film took so long to create and this is reflected on the quality and success of the film itself.
The character on the front page is intriguing for the viewers as it reveals some of the idea and the fact it is different excites the audience and will make them want to read more information about the film.
'Avatar' is in bold white writing, which makes it stand out from the other words on the page and because it is only one word, it is more likely to be remembered by the readers. 'But how long will we feel the force of James Cameron's sci-fi epic' This excites the audience as they would want to read on and discover the answer. This film was very highly speculated when it came out so people would want to buy this magazine to find out more facts before they went to watch the film in the cinema.
The use of colder colours in the magazine front cover would also intrigue people to want to buy it because of the contrast of blue and fictional character shown on the front.

Insidious 2 Trailer Analysis

The film begins with a stereotypical setting, very similar to the first insidious film, which is probably recognised early by the viewers. The first facial expression shown by the main character is a smile, which sets the theme happy for the viewers, not preparing them for disturbing and unforgettable scenes. The same characters star in this film as the last insidious, so the audience already know that they had experienced these traumatic events before. The theme quickly changes as she went from smiling, to fear and being concerned for her life and her family. There is non diagetic sound used to make the film seem happy and as if everything is going to be fine. The music then stops as soon as paranormal events begin to happen in their grandma's house. Scenes in this stage of the trailer involve a stereotypical house and a normal family which stuns the viewers into thinking these events could potentially happen to them. The same problems begin to happen as a random woman appears in the house and the childs room begins to be pestered and disrupted all over again.

'From the makers of 'Saw' and 'Paranormal Activity' gives the film a reputation of being good and successful straight away as majority of people have seen these films, staging this one as the same level of potential.
'This tarrying secret... Will be revealed'. This use of language would stand out to the naked eye as it intrigues the readers and makes them wonder what could be revealed in this film which wasn't revealed in the last. This unknown information would be the attraction as the audience would want to find this out to discover more about 'Insidious' and it's plot.

It also reveals in the trailer at the end, the release date of the film was 'Friday 13th September' and this is good viral release date timing as it is known that friday the 13th is unlucky and has also been used for previous horror films e.g. The Nighmare on Elm Street. This would attract more people as they believe they would get more of a thrill from watching it on this date that any other and this means the tickets would pretty much be booked out on the release day of the film.

Sweeney Todd Magazine Cover Analysis

The image is the main capture to the viewers and the character shown is quite intimidating and scary, stereotyping the genre and what this character is like. 'Entertainment Weekly' is a very good title to have for your magazine and they brand this right across the top for everyone to see. This is to make the audience believe that what they find in this magazine is going to entertain them, and the fact it is weekly, which grab regular customers to make them buy the magazine every week. This will make it get good publicity and therefore spread it's viral market. Johnny Depp is a well known movie star and is involved in very successful films such as 'Pirates of the Carribean' and 'Edward Scissorhands' which makes the magazine and the film marketing very well and a lot more well known.

This film was clearly the biggest attraction of film around this time which is why this magazine quickly wrote and published about it to increase their contents. Below their broadcast has more contents including big Hollywood movie stars e.g. Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Daniel Craig, Vince Vaughn, Kiera Knightly, Daniel Day-Lewis, and other Oscar award winners. The '39' which is under the title is the number of new films that are shown in the weekly magazine, which shows there is plenty to read about and various genres and interests which would attract all age groups and all types of people to enjoy and preview the films they're interested in.

The Strangers Film Poster Analysis

This film poster is signified as a horror film just by looking at it because there is the stereotype of a victim unaware that someone is looking at them, or is present in the background. This other character is visible to the audience but isn't noticed by the victim, this adds excitement to the horror due to the fact the victim has no idea she is being watched by this character. The title stands out as the colours of the background are quite dark shaded which makes the white font of 'The Strangers' stand out to the viewers. The clothes worn by the victim are very stereotypical and are just a common jeans and shirt, which relates to the audience because it is what they would wear. The similarities between the victim and the viewers is what excites and scares the audience more. The small text under the title reads 'Inspired by true events' which would obviously stick in the viewers mind and will make them want to go and watch the film even more. The fact it has happened could mean it could happen again, putting fear and also adrenaline into the audience.

The villain is in the darkness with a mask, which asks the question to the audience, what is he hiding, and why? There is also a small sentence which would give away some of the plot to the audience and make them want to go and watch the film when it is released. 'We tell ourselves there's nothing to fear. But sometimes we're wrong.' This doubts the audiences knowledge of what could happen and this makes them want to see the film because they want to see how it could be questioned and what could happen when things need to be feared.

Scream 4 Poster Analysis

The colour display on the poster is very good and would also attract the eye of those who love horror films and targets specific age groups between 18-25. The red is used to make certain factors about the poster stand out. The slogan above the image 'New Decade. New Rules.' Underlines that although people could have seen the earlier films of the sequel, things have changed and this will make them want to watch the film more due to the fact they don't know what could happen but they do know about the plot of the film. This is good technique which doesn't reveal too much but still keeps the audience interested. The red is also used on the '4' of the word 'Scream' and also in the date in which the film is being released. This could signify blood and danger which is a cleverly used colour scheme as it is not overused yet it is used on the important parts of the poster. This makes the release date superior to the rest of the poster and would make the date stick in the viewers heads. The black background relates to the stereotypical fear of the dark, and how most horror films are filmed at night, the mask looks more scary in this background as it is all you can see. The mask is also white, making it stand out even more with the black background as they are both contrasting colours.

The picture of the mask is the same as the others from the sequel so the mask is recognised by the viewers, it also represents horror, which is enough to excite the audience and make them want to go and watch the film. The title is bold in white and this is to make it stand out to the audience so they remember it. The significant number which is planted into the title in a different colour could mean two things, the most obvious that it is the 4th addition to the sequel of 'Scream' but also enforces the fact that the masked person on the poster is coming back for the 4th time, which would fill the audience with both fear and excitation. The word 'Scream' is often a sign of fear or fright, which relates to the genre of the film and could explain either what the characters will be doing in the film majority of the time, or the audience. The bottom of the mask is shaped like a dagger or a knife, this object is recognised as a dangerous and voilent object used to kill and injure people. Which plants the idea in the audience head that the mask represents something dangerous and evil.

Scream 4 Magazine Cover Analysis

The immediate factor that jumps out of this poster and would attract the most attention would be the hooded face, which reveals the film genre as a horror straight away from gripping the readers and making them want to find out more about the film and when it will be released. The statement below the picture reads 'Scream Returns!' Which would not only frighten the audience, but would also intrigue them and make them wants to find out more about the film, why has 'Scream' returned, and people that have seen the previous films of the sequel would wonder that too, they would also pursue more of an interest as they already know the genre and some of the storyline linked to 'Scream' .

The colour contrast of the magazine front cover is very effective as the background is red, it could represent death and blood, which works with the character in the poster who is clearly put there to excite the viewers.

There is also a list of actors who are commonly known in America where the film is set, this would publicize the film and expand it's chances of success through distribution through well known actors. The magazine title is called 'Entertainment Weekly' and this is written clearly across the front of the picture. Not only does this promote their magazine themselves, but also the film as it is saying that it is 'entertaining' which would grip the readers and make them want to not only find out more about the film in the magazine but actually want to make them watch the film too. This would be signified as good viral distribution and this magazine probably plays a bit part in the films success and promotion.

The Shining Poster Analysis- Research and Planning

The poster of 'The Shining' is a very basic yet effective background to represent the genre and style of the film. The background colour is white, making the image of the man seem even more scary and stand out more to the audience. Black and White are contrasting colours, making the black title stand out compared to the background and looking at the poster, the image and the title are the first things you would see. The title stands out, making the audience see it and have more chance of remembering it, therefore going to see it. The colour scheme is very basic, which is superior to other posters making it different and having more chance to be successful.

The genre of the film is leaked through the picture of a man's expression which is displayed clearly on the poster. His expression shows anger, and could be represented as a sign of violence. This stereotype of the expression would excite the audience and make them want to find out what he's looking at and what he's after.

The expression shown by the character on the poster could only suggest he's the killer, and this adds excitement for the audience and will make them more interested in wanting to go and watch the film. This actor was 'Jack Nicholson', and was extremely well known at the time of this film release. He is extremely experienced, which also adds good reputation to the film as it would mean the film is more likely to be successful because he stars in it.

The colour contrast of the poster is very simple yet effective as the title is bold, and the picture covers majority of the page. The picture is what purely catches the eye of the viewers and the reputation of Jack Nicholson would help raise awareness that the brand new horror film 'The Shining' was being released at that time. It doesn't reveal too much either to give away the plot of the film but just enough to intrigue the audience and making them want to watch it.

The Hobbit Film Poster Analysis

The audience are informed and educated about The Hobbit through this front cover on Empire Magazine. The colour and size of the title enhances the importance of it and could relate to it's significance in the film. The red font can enforce the importance of those words and make them superior to the others, they are also considerably bigger than the others because they are titles and subtitles relating to the film. The front page showing pictures of characters is going to intrigue the viewers and make them more interested in wanting to watch the film, as they now already know a small fraction about it. The brief quote underneath the title saying 'Here come the elves, less wise... more dangerous!' This gives imagery to the audience and also gives away some of the events that will happen in the film.

The magazine also publisizes itself by putting more films at the bottom of the poster as a strip, the famous and well known actors below would add excitement, these actors are 'Will Ferrell, Simon Pegg, and Alan Partridge, who are all extremely well know, making the readers want to purchase the magazine as it is an addition to 'The Hobbit'.
