The poster of 'The Shining' is a very basic yet effective background to represent the genre and style of the film. The background colour is white, making the image of the man seem even more scary and stand out more to the audience. Black and White are contrasting colours, making the black title stand out compared to the background and looking at the poster, the image and the title are the first things you would see. The title stands out, making the audience see it and have more chance of remembering it, therefore going to see it. The colour scheme is very basic, which is superior to other posters making it different and having more chance to be successful.
The genre of the film is leaked through the picture of a man's expression which is displayed clearly on the poster. His expression shows anger, and could be represented as a sign of violence. This stereotype of the expression would excite the audience and make them want to find out what he's looking at and what he's after.
The expression shown by the character on the poster could only suggest he's the killer, and this adds excitement for the audience and will make them more interested in wanting to go and watch the film. This actor was 'Jack Nicholson', and was extremely well known at the time of this film release. He is extremely experienced, which also adds good reputation to the film as it would mean the film is more likely to be successful because he stars in it.
The colour contrast of the poster is very simple yet effective as the title is bold, and the picture covers majority of the page. The picture is what purely catches the eye of the viewers and the reputation of Jack Nicholson would help raise awareness that the brand new horror film 'The Shining' was being released at that time. It doesn't reveal too much either to give away the plot of the film but just enough to intrigue the audience and making them want to watch it.
